The Botany Department of Daulat Ram College was established in 1968, is one of the leading Departments of the University in the field of teaching in plant sciences and life sciences. The department was awarded “star status” by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India. All faculty members are highly qualified, dedicated, and experienced who impart knowledge in various sections of botany including  plant physiology, tissue culture,  molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, anatomy, biotechnology and bioinformatics, reproductive biology etc. The Department is equipped with three teaching laboratories, specimen rich Museum, a Tissue Culture facility, Bioinformatics lab and a Botanical Garden.

The faculty members of the Department use a variety of teaching tools to make teaching more effective. In theory classes, they use PowerPoint presentations and charts, while in practical classes, they give instructions using charts, herbarium specimens, live specimens, permanent slides, and PowerPoint presentations. All teachers are actively involved in devising innovative means  of  teaching  and  research.  Student  Development  Programme  (SDPs),  Faculty Development Programme (FDPs), workshops, seminars, invited lectures by renowned scientist etc. are organised time to time to enhance the academic skill of the students. Botanical garden is the heart of our department which helps students understanding various aspects of taxonomy, medicinal plants, and adaptive features of the plant kingdom. A separate section in the garden has cacti, succulents and aquatic plants with fishes and turtle can also been seen. Further the department organizes educational trips to Research Institutes, Biodiversity Parks and Industries for enrichment of the subject.

The Department of Botany has an active Botanical Society named “Vasundhara” which organizes lectures by distinguished academicians and scientists. The Society also facilitates participation of students in various activities across colleges of the University of Delhi. In addition  to  academics,  students  have  the  opportunity  to  showcase  their  creativity  by participating in extracurricular activities organized by the botanical society "Vasundhara" during the annual botanical fest, "Orchidz." “Lianas”, the botanical society magazine gives the student a platform to learn and contribute interesting self-composed articles in the field of plant sciences. Four-year NEP course of B.Sc. (Hons.) Botany and B.Sc. (Prog.) Life Science, equips the student in-depth knowledge about the subject and also motivates them to face the new challenges in the field of plant sciences.

The NEP based curriculum has various SEC and DSE courses offered by our Department for example  Hydroponic  and Aeroponic  Farming, Organic  Farming, Viewing  and  Capturing Diversity  in  Nature, Research Methodology, Industrial and Environmental Microbiology, Bioinformatics and Biostatistics, Natural Resource Management papers and many more which are highly helpful in developing entrepreneurship skills among young minds.
